I wanted to learn how to bring on that aching like Elvis singing “Old Shep,” Michael Jackson singing “Ben,” (from the movie of the same name-good gravy, a young musician with a rat as his pet, and yes, spoiler alert, in the movie the rat dies), and Henry Gross singing “Shannon” written about Beach Boy Brian Wilson’s dead dog (Yes, I had a thing for songs written about dying animals, still do!). I studied pathos in songs-didn’t have the word for it until I was in college, but I could feel it. This curiosity led to my first desire to write my own stories. Sometimes I’d go for days wondering … It was my first taste of literary analysis, of understanding the elements of story. Was the hotel actually Hell? What is that “warm smell of colitas” and what are those “mission bells”? My siblings, my friends, and I deconstructed the lyrics together, making attempts at meaning. I may not have been able to memorize lines from the Canterbury Tales or The Declaration of Independence or Poe’s “Annabelle Lee,” but I still remember the entirety of “Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “Hotel California.” Songs like The Eagles’s “Hotel California” taught me the effectiveness of place, concrete detail, metaphor. I can’t remember many paragraphs from books I’ve loved, ones I’ve read and taught time and time again. I just knew that with one Carly Simon song, I not only learned the meanings of “vain,” “yacht,” “gavotte,” “eclipse,” “naïve,” “lear jet,” I found, on our spinning globe, the Saratoga and Nova Scotia she mentioned in “You’re So Vain.” And I was obsessed. Back then, I hadn’t yet heard of so-called “high” and “low” art, of pop culture and the cultured elite back then, no one knew Dylan would win the Nobel or they would teach his lyrics at the Ivys. Through songs, I built my lexicon as well as my early story craft. Instead, it was music that made me a writer. And those who lived too far out didn’t have access to free public library cards only kids in town did. A bookmobile showed up each month, depending on the weather, but it’s nearly impossible to learn the art of browsing stacks when others are waiting for their turns, when there’s no lingering allowed. Elementary schools shared a traveling librarian who’d cart books in her car. Like many young kids in urban settings, those from my rural western Pennsylvania community had limited library exposure some of us never stepped foot in a real library until junior high. The effect of listening to music is particularly powerful: we are laying down the tracks along which we’ll respond to music for decades to come. Librarians are doing their best to clarify the specific needs of those in rural America and then developing ways to meet them despite lack of funding and support, but there is still much to improve. Recent studies of rural communities and education have also shown that rural America, like urban America, is diverse in economics, race, and lifestyle, recognizing there are categories of rural-“fringe,” “distant,” and “remote”-with unique needs. So, bookstore owners, music store owners like Gene, and librarians hold the keys to powerful experiences for Americans who are cut off by geography. Neuroscientists and researchers, studying neural pathways with the help of music and MRIs, have proven that in adolescence, the effect of listening to music is particularly powerful: we are laying down the tracks along which we’ll respond to music for decades to come. I knew it then, and in countless ways I’m sure of it now. I spent hours memorizing lyrics of my dad’s favorites, “Boy Named Sue” from Johnny Cash’s At San Quentin album, all of Hank William’s hits, Patsy Cline’s.Īfter I learned to read, I pored over liner notes, transcribing lyrics, gingerly lifting the needle to replay and replay until I got the words just right as this was important work, learning this kind of storytelling. We might not have been a reading family with shelves of books, but we had a modest yet amazing collection of records. Though my blue-collar family struggled between layoffs, we owned a stereo console cabinet with good solid speakers. He’d play a tune if you asked for a sample, handling the vinyl like blown glass. Gene was a near-twin to Wolfman Jack, the well-known thick-haired, bearded disc jockey of the 70s, but Gene was quieter, more contemplative. Behind the counter 45s hung on a massive peg board and hundreds more LPs seemed to be waiting on the shelves, readying to be flipped through. At Gene’s Music City, albums covered in sagging plastic wrap lined three walls. There are much better paying and more rewarding jobs in the area. I quit when my manager just flat out gave me zero hours for the week and couldn't even answer me when I asked if I was fired. Overall, the work itself is fine but the management/owners are ONLY concerned with making money and do not care about the employees who make that money for them. On top of that there are no incentives to work harder or opportunities to advance. I'll admit that there were nights were I did not give 100% effort, but when you are criticized with no constructive feedback (combined with the lack of hours or co-workers) it makes working there very demoralizing. I was trained for a total of four days, after that I barely saw my manager but he would still complain about the quality of our work. Rocket Fizzs line of salt water taffy comes in more familiar flavors, like Banana Split, Chocolate Malt, and Strawberry Cheesecake. Over time the mid shifts were cut and the store hours were shortened on the weekdays, which meant I was expected to run the whole store alone for minimum wage while barely getting hours. Initially, there were 3 shifts (opening, mid, and closing) and the store hours were 10:30-9 which meant decent opportunities for hours and I had at least one person working with me. At first I thought it was a decent job that was more fun to work at than the average retail store, but due to poor management decisions it became a much worse experience. I worked at rocket fizz for nearly 4 months. My co-workers are great too even though I really only work with them on weekends and on the day we receive shipment. I am so glad I found this job as the customers are great too! We have tons of different sodas and candy I never would have known about had I not worked here. I'm not sure if it is trained, or just the general personality disposition of people that decide to own one, but I have never been to a Rocket Fizz that has had poor or displeasing service. This allows us a place to transfer if we plan on transferring to a college near one of their locations. I want to start by saying that ALL Rocket Fizz (it is a franchise) have outstanding customer service. They not only own the Bossier City store where I work, but they also own 2 locations in Dallas, 1 near Jackson, MS, and 1 in Little Rock, AR and are currently seeking out other locations. While they are sort of like the Managers, they are training one of the associates as Manager now, so that shows there is room for advancement with them. The pay is excellent, starting at $14/hr and quickly going to $15/hr, with really laid back owners who are willing to work around my college class schedule. While the owners expect you to treat this as a retail sales job and not a cashier job, I was pleasantly surprised they were cool with and even encouraged me when they caught me singing to customers and using the product as my microphone! This really is a great place to work. Rocket Fizz to donate Small Business Saturday sales to Ann Arbor animal shelter Rocket Fizz owners to open retro-themed toy store in downtown Kalamazoo 4 last. A full-bottom no-slip pad works double duty by providing plenty of stay put while also eliminating electrical contact points from guitar amp chassis bolts that could cause ground loops. Like all Radial products, the ProRMP is built tough! Encased in 14 gauge steel, the ProRMP employs a unique book-end™ design with a tough I-beam frame that protects it from damage and assures the PC board and solder points will not be stressed. Plug and play easy to use, the ProRMP connects from the recorder to your amp and effects units and does all the impedance matching for you. The magic behind the ProRMP's great tone is a custom wound transformer that at once converts the balanced line level source to a hi-z output for your amp while also acting as an electrical isolator to eliminate troublesome ground loops that can often cause buzz and hum in the sound. This means it does not require any external powering. The Radial ProRMP is a 100% passive Reamper. You can modify the tone as the recording progresses while using real amps, effects and natural ambiance for the most organic tone. Get clean DI recordings of any electric instrument, then reamp using the same box The Radial Reamp Station is an invaluable tool for sculpting guitar. No more hours of repetition for the guitarist, no more rushed jobs due to scheduling, and best of all, you do not have to commit to the sound of the track. Once the magic has been captured, send the clean track back to the amps and effects and adjust the sound to suit. You start by recording a clean track and concentrate on capturing the best musical performance. For years, Reamping has been the 'secret weapon' for countless recordings by the biggest names in the business! Few realize that recording engineers not only Reamp guitars, but often Reamp bass, keyboards, drums and even voice as a means to bring creative new tones and sonic signatures to their music. This is one of the rare cases when it would have been better to handle the conversations with text and skip out on the vocals altogether. Dialogue is terrible, though, and the voice acting is amateurish at best. Story missions run for some time and move you through a fairly interesting story. Spoiler: It turns out the galaxy is not literally on fire.Īt first glance, there seems to be a lot to do in Galaxy on Fire 2. You can get right to the end of a drilling job and screw up, blasting the asteroid to rubble and leaving you with nothing to show for your work. Touchy controls make mining more difficult than it sounds. Mess up for more than a few seconds, and the bit can go haywire, blowing up the asteroid and leaving you with nothing. Mining is handled with a minigame where you keep a drill bit centered in an ever-shrinking target. Another option is mining asteroids for various precious metals. You can stick close to the campaign storyline dealing with the Void, or you can go off on your own and visit space-station lounges to see what odd jobs are available from the barflies. This means that you spend all of your time zipping around between a lot of planets spread through a lot of star systems, looking for the best way to make enough money to buy new ships, weapons, shields and armor, other nifty upgrades, and commodities that can then be flogged around the galaxy in the usual "buy low, sell high" fashion. The single-player-only gameplay sticks closely to space-trader/space-flight sim traditions. So what's a poor boy to do but sell himself to the highest bidder to make a few bucks. The Rip Van Winkle thing has left him a pauper, with only a beat-up old ship to his name, given to him at the start of the game as a reward for helping a space miner. New alliances have been formed, and everybody is being threatened by wormhole raids from a mysterious alien race dubbed the Void. Things have changed in the galaxy, however. The time warp is rarely referred to as the game chugs along, although Maxwell does regularly run into buddies who knew him many years ago. Being displaced from his own time by 35 years doesn't impact much on the plot, though. Maxwell does something of a Buck Rogers at the start of the action, as an engine malfunction hurtles him from the year 3589 to 3624. Maxwell, who might have the name of a chiropodist but who has the guts of a kick-ass mercenary. The story sees you step into the space boots of Keith T. You could do worse than describing Galaxy on Fire 2 as a poor man's Freelancer (or, if you're a real old-timer, Elite). Maxwell has been preparing for this mission by playing lots of Asteroids. In the end, the pluses and minuses add up to a passable space shooter that hooks you for a good time, but not a long time. And the interface is both bland and somewhat confusing. Combat is predictable and shallow due to poor enemy AI and a lack of options when in the cockpit. But there is a lot of repetition in the missions. The game features an addictive career path spiced up with lots of ways to upgrade your ship and gear, tons of random and story-based missions, and many hot-and-heavy moments in dogfights with enemies. Developer Fishlabs has made few changes to the HD version of the game that has been selling well on tablets and phones since its release. Hit iOS/Android space shooter Galaxy on Fire 2 comes to the PC with mixed results. It has over 30 years of ongoing development. MS Office 2019 is a complete application that is built for your productiveness.
